December 13, 2007

YRP R&D Promotion Committee and YRP Business Development Institute, Inc. (YRP-BDI) concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for research exchange with Hsinchu Science Park (HSP) on December 13, 2007.

The signing ceremony took place in HSP. On behalf of YRP, Dr. Shingo Ohmori, Vice President of YRP R&D Promotion Committee (Vice President of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology), and Mr. Masahiro Kato, President of YRP-BDI, singed the MOU. On behalf of HSP, Dr. Wen-Hsiung Huang, Deputy Minister & Professor of Taiwan's National Science Council, and Mr. Der-ray Huang, Director General of Taiwan's Science Park Administration, attended the ceremony.

Hsinchu Science Park was established in 1979, covering an area of 1,300 hectares. HSP has introduced Taiwan's high-tech industrial research laboratories and manufacturing plants, driving the national high-tech industrial development in cooperation with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, etc. The annual production output of HSP, worth TWD 1.25 trillion in 2007, accounts for 1/10 of Taiwan's gross domestic product.
Presently, Taiwan's telecommunication industries draw worldwide attention. The annual production output of the national ICT industries was worth approximately TWD 2.5 trillion in 2006, achieving growth of 42% compared to the previous year. Taiwan's wireless LAN products have gained more than 95% market share in the world. Mobile terminals and automobile GPS units show the highest growth rate in global market share. Taiwan's national strategy, “M-Taiwan Project”, is aimed at further expansion of market share of Wi-Fi and WiMAX products.
Recognizing the importance of Japan-Taiwan partnership in R&D and manufacturing capabilities in order to develop internationally competitive ICT products, YRP R&D Promotion Committee has already concluded MOUs with ITRI, Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration (STSPA), and Far Eastern Telecom Park, respectively. By concluding an MOU with HSP, YRP has developed the Japan-Taiwan ICT industry-academia-government collaboration platform throughout Taiwan.
