What is AP-NeGeMo /AP-WBF ?

What is AP-NeGeMo?

The Asia-Pacific Seminar on Next Generation Mobile Communications (AP-NeGeMo) is a one-day seminar, aiming at introducing Japan 's latest R&D on mobile communication technologies widely to the Asia-Pacific region, and exchanging views with local researchers to promote collaborative R&D activities. Inaugurated in 2000, AP-NeGeMo has been an annual event, jointly organized by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), YRP R&D Promotion Committee, and local research institutions. The seminar has been favorably accepted in every hosting country as a worthwhile opportunity to learn about the Japan 's most advanced R&D on 3G and 4G mobile communication technologies, as well as to seek research collaboration possibility.

What is AP-WBF?

The Asia-Pacific Wireless Broadband Forum (AP-WBF) is an expansion of AP-NeGeMo not only for scientific exchange but also business exchange with hosting countries. Inaugurated in 2005, the forum has been held in Thailand and Malaysia . Just as AP-NeGeMo, AP-WBF is jointly sponsored by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), YRP R&D Promotion Committee, and local research institutions.

Background

In May 1999, Yokosuka Research Park R&D Committee (currently YRP R&D Promotion Committee) sent a delegation to Singapore , Malaysia , and Thailand , aiming at a primary study on R&D activities for mobile communications in other Asian countries by visiting local government agencies, international organizations, telecommunication operators, and universities.

As a result of their visit, the members of the delegation agreed that gan annual opportunity to bring researchers togetherh should be desirable to promote mutual understanding and exchange in expectationof collaborative opportunities and standardization efforts of research achievements. Local counterparts expressed keen interest in hosting a seminar to learn about Japan 's latest R&D on 3G and 4G mobile communication technologies. These requests from both sides combined to originate AP-NeGeMo.

Feedback

Each AP-NeGeMo is held in cooperation with the host-nation's government, major telecommunications research institutes from local public, private and academic sectors, APT, Japanese Embassy, etc. A dozen of Japanese researchers from the member companies of YRP R&D Promotion Committee participate in every AP-NeGeMo as speakers. Local researchers also make presentations on their R&D efforts. The consensus of the participants' opinion was that AP-NeGeMo was a perfect opportunity to catch up with the latest R&D on the most-advanced mobile technologies, as well as to facilitate research / business exchange. Such favorable feedback resulted in their earnest request that AP-NeGeMo should be held on a regular basis.
