Report on Wireless Technology Park 2016

On 25-27 May 2016, YRP R&D Promotion Committee, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, and YRP Academia Collaboration Network co-hosted the Wireless Technology Park (WTP) 2016 in Tokyo Big Sight.

WTP is a unique event focused on research and development of wireless communications technologies and held annually in cooperation with industry, academia, and government. The event consists of three parts: the “Exhibition” where you can see the latest wireless technology, the “Seminars” that introduce new technical trends of wireless communications, and the “Academia Session” where university laboratories present R&D results and conclusions.

This year, under the main theme of “World leading wireless technologies toward 2020,” the seminars and exhibits in WTP2016 focused on following keywords: 5th Generation Mobile Communication System (5G), IoT&M2M & Wi-SUN, Positioning (QZSS, Indoor positioning, location information, etc.), ITS (Connected car, Automatic safe driving, etc.), Next-generation wireless communication system, Wireless application for disaster prevention/reduction, Regional ICT utilization, Regional Revitalization, SDN/NFV, etc.

Blessed with fine weather, the number of the visitors to the event exceeded 47,100 including the visitors to “Wireless Japan 2016”, “Transport System Expo 2016”, and "International Drone Expo 2016" held concurrently. We are grateful to all the visitors and all people concerned in the event.

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony was held in the morning of May 25 in the Exhibition Hall inviting Mr. Keiichi KOSHIMIZU, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan, and Mr. Yuto Yoshida, Mayor of the Yokosuka City.

Exhibition and Pavilions

There were 116 exhibitors in WTP2016.

Featuring key technologies exhibited in WTP2016, pavilions of “5G Tokyo Bay Summit® 2016” “Location Service” “ITS” “Anti-disaster ICT” and “Flexible Factory” were set up as well as the special exhibition on “Regional Revitalization and Regional ICT utilization. “

Seminars

25 courses of seminars and sessions were arranged during the 3 days, and a number of lectures and panel discussions were given on various topics.

WTP International Day on May 26

This year WTP International Day was planned again on Thursday, May 26. International Session was held and 8 speakers were invited from foreign companies and organizations that sought business partnership in Japan. Two of those companies set up exhibition booths in WTP2016, too.

On this day, explanations on exhibits were available in English in major exhibition booths to welcome foreign visitors, and two courses of exhibition booth tour were arranged for the members of foreign embassies in Japan.

In YRP booth, main activities of YRP R&D Promotion Committee were introduced: Broadband Wireless Forum, Wireless Smart Utility Networking Use Promotion Committee, etc. The booth also highlighted the R&D activities of YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratories as well as the initiatives of Yokosuka City Office to invite companies to YRP and Yokosuka city.

Academia Session and Academia Poster Session

Academia Session and Academia Poster Session were also held to provide the university laboratories with the opportunities to present their research activities and results.

Exhibition on History of Wireless Communications

Historical collections of various communication terminals were also displayed in the exhibition area. Most of the exhibits can be seen in the Exhibition Room in YRP Center No. 1 Bldg.
