The 17th International Symposium on
Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications
- WPMC2014 -

The 17th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC2014) was held in Sydney, Australia, from September 7 to 10, 2014, under the theme of “Orchestrating Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications.” The symposium was co-hosted by the National Institutes of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and YRP R&D Promotion Committee (YRP) and was held in cooperation with Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Macquarie University, and other powerful Australian partners.

On Sept. 7, tutorials went on all day long, and WPMC2014 Opening Plenary was held in the morning of Sept. 8. At first, Prof. Ian Oppermann, General Co-Chair of WPMC2014, made opening remarks, and it was followed by the welcome greetings by Dr. Fumihiko Tomita, Vice President of NICT, and Prof. Dr. Mitsutoshi Hatori, Chairman of YRP R&D Promotion Committee. Then, a presentation titled “The Future of Radio Wave” was presented as the guest speech by Ms. Eri Otsuka, Consul for Communications Policy, Japanese Government. Due to an unavoidable reason, another guest, Prof. Mary O'Kane, NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, Australia, was unable to attend, and Prof. Oppermann conveyed her message of greetings to the organizers and participants. Finally, WPMC Co-Chair, Dr. Shingo Ohmori, Vice President of YRP R&D Promotion Committee, greeted and expressed his gratitude for the great cooperation of the local organizing committee members.

Afterwards, the session moved to keynote speeches, and, in the afternoon, 3 sessions on different themes went on in parallel in 3 conference rooms. This time, the total number of the accepted papers was 135 out of 184 submitted papers, and in spite of the high acceptance rate, the quality of the papers was very high according to the comments of Technical Programme Committee members. 8 keynote speeches and 5 invited speeches were also given, and WPMC2014 collected 190 participants from 24 countries in total. Presentations, Q&As, and lively discussions continued on the following days. In the evening of Sept. 9, Award Banquet was held to announce and congratulate award winners. This year, 3 winners were announced respectively for Best Paper Awards, Student Best Paper Awards, and Student Travel Grant Awards, and participants gave big applause to all winners. In the occasion, representatives of Japanese organizers invited the local members of Organizing Committee to the stage to express their sincere feeling of appreciation. The Banquet provided the best opportunity for participants’ mutual exchange, and the venue was filled with warm and friendly atmosphere.

Next year, WPMC2015 is planned to be held in Hyderabad, India.
